December 5, 2025: Congressman Kweisi Mfume and Senator Chris Van Hollen are announcing the introduction of legislation to designate the Museum of the Blind People’s Movement as the National Museum of the Blind People’s Movement. This resolution demonstrates a congressional acknowledgment of the importance of preserving and sharing the history of blind Americans.

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is building the Museum of the Blind People's Movement, which will be the first museum led, designed, and owned by blind Americans. This museum will preserve and champion the authentic stories of blind people, showcase the organized blind movement's contributions to society, and challenge misconceptions about blindness.

While the resolution must still move through the standard congressional process, its introduction is an an impactful step toward recognizing the Museum as a national cultural institution. The NFB will continue to advocate for its official adoption and public support. Currently, the Museum is in the initial development stages, and we are actively preserving our archives and collections for future use in the Museum.

Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind shared: "The introduction of this legislation marks a historic moment in our movement's journey. The National Museum of the Blind People's Movement will be the first blind-led and blind-centered museum that authentically preserves and shares our stories of advocating, innovating, and transforming society.

"We are grateful to Congressman Kweisi Mfume and Senator Chris Van Hollen for championing this recognition. This museum will serve as a national platform for dialogue, education, and inclusion—connecting our rich history with action that makes a difference."
